Saunayoga Oy

The tram rattled along the waterfront as I headed to Saunayoga Oy in Helsinki's Lauttasaari district. It was a crisp autumn morning, with leaves turning gold under a pale sky. I stepped off at Gyldenintie and found the address tucked into a quiet residential block, number 12 i 42. The entrance felt welcoming, like slipping into a neighbor's home for a shared ritual.
Inside, the space was simple and clean. I changed in the small room provided and grabbed a shower to rinse off before the session. The group was small, just a few locals and me, all settling in for the thirty-minute class.
Easing into the Warmth
We filed into the sauna, the air already mild at around forty to fifty degrees. No intense blast of heat, just a gentle warmth that wrapped around us as we sat on the wooden benches. The instructor started us off slowly, guiding movements that anyone could follow, no yoga background needed.
I began with stretches for my neck and shoulders, feeling the tension melt away in the soft steam. The heat worked quietly, easing into my muscles and joints without pushing too hard. It was all about presence, moving at a calm pace that matched the sauna's hush.
Shifting to the Core
Halfway through, we switched to poses that built strength in the core and legs. Sitting there, I twisted gently, using the bench for support. One move involved a small towel as a prop, like in their sauna pilates style, though this was the yoga session. It targeted my spine and hips, leaving me feeling looser and more centered.
The mind quieted too, thoughts drifting off with the rising warmth. By the end, after thirty minutes, I stepped out refreshed, the session's rhythm lingering like a good book's afterglow. They offer these classes in English sometimes, and even training if you want to lead your own.
Outside, the Helsinki chill greeted me again, but I carried that inner warmth back through the streets.
Good to know
