The pink facade of the Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna caught my eye as I walked up Hovioikeudenkatu in Kouvola. It was a cool autumn afternoon in the Lakeland region, with leaves turning gold around the town. I had checked in earlier, drawn by the promise of a proper Finnish sauna after a day exploring nearby forests.

My room nodded to local themes, like the wilds of Repovesi National Park, with simple decor that felt cozy and tied to the area. But I was here for the heat. The hotel has three saunas, each with its own hot tub, and they open every evening from five to ten. I headed down after settling in, towel in hand.

The lobby buzzed quietly, with guests chatting near the Frans & Rose bistro. That French-style spot serves breakfast too, but I saved it for morning.

Stepping into the Men's Sauna

I chose the men's sauna, separate from the women's, as listed. The door opened to a warm, woody space. Steam rose gently when I tossed water on the stones. The heat built up slow at first, then wrapped around me like a blanket.

A few other guests were there, locals by the sound of their chat. We nodded hellos. I sat on the bench, letting sweat bead on my skin. The air carried that clean, piney scent you get in Finnish saunas. After a good fifteen minutes, I stepped out to the hot tub.

Bubbles churned in the poreallas, as they call it here. I sank in, the warm water easing every muscle. It was just what I needed after hiking earlier. The sauna area had showers nearby, and a changing room that felt practical and clean.

Cooling Off in the Fitness Room

Once refreshed, I wandered to the fitness room on the first floor. It's open from seven in the morning till ten at night, free for guests. A few machines lined the walls: treadmills, weights, that sort of thing. I did a light stretch, still feeling the sauna's glow.

The hotel prides itself on green practices, with certifications like Green Key. That mattered to me, knowing they care about the environment in this lake-dotted region. Wheelchair access is there too, with special rooms and facilities.

Outside, Kouvola's streets were quieting down. The town has an industrial feel, but spots like Tykkimäki amusement park are close by, though I skipped that this trip. Back in my room, I thought about the bistro's bar for a drink, but called it a night instead.

The whole visit left me relaxed, ready for more of Finland's lakeland the next day.
