Ruka Safaris / Aivoriihi

Snow crunched under my boots as I walked up to the Aivoriihi sauna in Rukatunturi. The air carried that sharp Lapland chill, even in the fading light of afternoon. I had booked a session through Ruka Safaris, drawn by the promise of a proper wood-fired experience on the edge of the wilderness.
Inside, the space felt built for gatherings. The name Aivoriihi hints at brainstorming, and it made sense with the setup for groups. I joined a mix of locals and visitors, all ready to steam and chat. The sturdy Aito stove had been heating for about four hours, building up that deep, even warmth.
Settling onto the Benches
We climbed the benches, which could hold up to thirty people at once. That day, our group was smaller, maybe a dozen, giving everyone room to stretch out. The heat rose steadily from the stones, and someone tossed water on them to release a wave of steam. Conversations started flowing, ideas bouncing around like the löyly itself.
I appreciated how the sauna encouraged that. Good company and solid steam seemed to spark the best thoughts, just as the description suggested. We talked about travels in Kuusamo, the nearby forests, and even some work decisions that needed sorting. The wood fire added a subtle smoky note to the air, grounding the whole thing in nature.
After a round, I stepped out to cool down. The outdoor hot tub waited in the yard, bubbles churning in the cold air. I sank in, letting the warm water ease the heat from my skin while staring at the snowy landscape.
Waiting by the Fire
Back inside, the fireplace room next door offered a spot to wait for the next turn. Some of the group lounged there with small snacks, the fire crackling softly. It kept the rotation smooth for larger crowds, though we did not need it much that visit.
The whole session ran a few hours, and at 420 euros for the group, it felt like a fair split for the setup. I lingered in the relaxation area afterward, sipping water and reflecting on the day. The sauna sat in a garden-like spot, surrounded by Lapland's quiet beauty, with paths leading into the wild.
As I left along Myllylahdentie, the northern sky started to darken. That visit stuck with me, a reminder of how a simple sauna can turn into a space for real connection.
