The bus from Itäkeskus dropped me at Brobölen stop on a crisp Saturday afternoon. I walked the kilometer along Hindsbyntie, through quiet fields and patches of forest, until I reached the sauna spot. Sipoonjoen perinnesauna sits low, built into the ground like an old burrow, blending into the Helsinki region's rural edge.

I paid the 29 euros for a public session, which runs about two hours but stretches longer on weekends. Up to six people can join, though that day it felt cozy with just a few locals. The air carried a faint smoky scent even before stepping inside.

Inside the Smoke Sauna

I changed in the relaxation room and headed to the main sauna. It's a traditional smoke sauna, heated slowly with wood, leaving that clean, purified feel the place promises. The heat built gently at first, then wrapped around me as I sat on the wooden benches.

Someone tossed water on the stones, and steam rose with a hiss. We chatted lightly about the weather, the forest outside. No rush here: sessions go from half past two until seven on Saturdays, giving time to settle in.

After a while, the warmth soaked deep. I stepped out for a break, feeling fresh and light.

Trying the Turf Ceremony

Though I visited on a Saturday, I recalled they offer turf Thursdays with a ceremony from four to five, followed by sauna time. Curious from what I'd heard, I imagined joining one: the saunottaja leading a treatment with soothing peat from the bogs.

In the nearby hoitosauna Love, they provide vihta treatments, using birch branches, or relaxing sauna massages. That day, I stuck to the basics, but the option lingered in my mind. The forest setting adds to it, with guided walks or yoga available for private groups.

Back in the smoke sauna, I lingered, letting the ritual unfold at its own pace.

The Cold Plunge and Hot Tub

Outside, the cold plunge waited in the open air, surrounded by trees. I eased in after the heat, the chill biting sharp against my skin. It woke me right up, with panoramic views of the Sipoo landscape stretching out.

Then, into the hot tub for contrast: warm water bubbling, easing the shock. A shower nearby rinsed off the sweat, and parking spots made it easy for those driving in. The whole area feels tied to nature, forest paths inviting a wander.

As the session wound down, I dressed and headed back, the fresh feeling carrying me along the road.
