Original Sokos Royal, Vaasa

The coastal wind picked up as I walked through Vaasa's streets toward the hotel. Gray clouds hung low over the city, typical for a Finnish autumn day along the Gulf of Bothnia. I had heard about the Original Sokos Royal from fellow travelers, drawn by its spot in the heart of town at Hovioikeudenpuistikko 18.

Inside, the lobby felt bright and lively, with people chatting in the lounge areas. I checked in quickly, noting the recent renovations that gave the place a fresh, modern feel. Two buildings connected seamlessly, offering rooms that looked comfortable from the glimpses I caught.

An air bridge led to nearby shops and a cinema, but I headed straight for the elevator. The top floor promised something special, a sauna and pool setup called HUIPPU, with panoramic views that stretched to the sea.

The sauna door opened to a warm, woody space. Steam rose gently as I stepped in, the air thick with humidity. I found a spot on the bench and let the heat build around me.

Changing rooms were nearby, equipped with showers for a quick rinse before and after. Everything felt accessible, even with wheelchair ramps in place. The session unfolded quietly, just me and a couple of other guests, soaking in the warmth that eased the chill from outside.

After about twenty minutes, I felt ready for a break. The heat had loosened my muscles, and the panoramic windows hinted at the views waiting beyond.

The pool area connected right to the sauna, water calm and inviting under the wide sky. I slipped in, the coolness a sharp contrast to the steam I had just left. Floating there, I looked out over Vaasa, the city spreading below toward the archipelago in the distance.

Waves of the gulf seemed to merge with the horizon, islands dotting the water like scattered stones. It was peaceful, with the hotel's bar and restaurant sounds faint from below. Parking had been easy earlier, and wifi kept me connected if I needed it, but up here, I set my phone aside.

As the sun dipped lower, casting orange light across the scene, I lingered a bit longer. The mix of heat, water, and those vast views made the visit stick in my mind.

Eventually, I dried off and took the elevator down. The lobby buzzed with evening arrivals, some heading to the restaurants for dinner. Vaasa's energy industry vibe carried through the hotel, a nod to the region's story.

I stepped out into the cooling air, feeling refreshed. The sauna had been a solid urban escape, tied to the hotel's spa setup. If I returned to this coastal spot, I would aim for another session up top.
