City Sauna & Cruise

Rain drizzled steadily as our group pulled into the parking lot at Damsgårdsveien in Laksevåg. Bergen in late autumn often feels like that, with gray skies hanging low over the fjords. We had booked the sauna cruise online ahead of time, eager for something different from the usual shore-bound saunas. The boat waited at the dock, promising a mix of heat and open water.
Our party of five fit the mid-range slot, costing us 4200 NOK total. We added towel rentals at 50 NOK each, skipping the bathrobes for 100 NOK since we brought our own. The lounge room onshore gave us a spot to change and store bags before boarding. As we stepped aboard, the crew checked the weather forecast one last time. They had warned us via email that trips depend on conditions, and might get pushed back two or three days if needed. Today, though, the fjord looked calm enough to set out.
Firing Up the Stove
The boat eased away from the dock, and soon the cityscape of Bergen slid by on one side, with rugged landscapes unfolding on the other. Inside, the traditional wood-fired sauna began to warm. I settled on a bench, feeling the heat build from the stove as logs crackled softly.
We sailed in comfort, the vessel steady despite the light chop. Views poured in from every angle: steep hills dotted with houses, the water reflecting patches of sky. The group chatted at first, but the rising temperature drew us into quiet. Sweat beaded on my skin, and the air carried that clean, woody scent from the fire.
Someone suggested a break outside. Stepping onto the deck, the cool wind hit like a reset. We leaned on the railings, watching the fjord stretch out. Back in the sauna, the cycle repeated, heat pulling us deeper into relaxation. It felt far from the everyday rush, just as promised.
Sharing Stories on Deck
As the cruise looped through the byfjorden, we gathered on deck between sauna rounds. Friends shared laughs about work stresses left behind, the boat's motion adding to the sense of escape. This setup worked well for our small group, though I noted prices climb for larger parties, up to 6200 NOK for eleven or twelve people.
The whole experience lasted a couple of hours, enough to unwind without dragging. No one rushed us. We avoided the everyday hassle, as the highlights suggested, creating those quiet moments with loved ones.
Docking back in Laksevåg, the rain had eased. We collected our things from the lounge, bodies loose from the heat and views. If the weather holds, I'd return for another sail, maybe with a bigger crowd next time.
