Dråpen Fjordbad & Sauna

The wind off the fjord carried a sharp chill as I walked the short path from Namsos center to Angelskjæret. It was early autumn, with leaves turning gold along the riverbanks. I had heard about Dråpen Fjordbad from a local, and the idea of a sauna right at the water's edge drew me in. The setup felt simple, tucked into the outdoor area by the beach, with the Namsen river flowing out to meet the sea.
I arrived around midday, after a ten-minute stroll from town. Free parking sat just fifty meters away, which made things easy. The sauna building stood low and sturdy, positioned so close to the shore that waves lapped nearby. Next door, the Namsen ice bathing club's bathhouse offered changing rooms, a practical spot to get ready.
Lighting the Fire on the Beach
I had booked a private rental through their website, and the place was mine for the afternoon. Open from six in the morning until nine at night, year-round, it gave plenty of flexibility. I started by gathering some wood for a fire on the beach, as the setup allowed. The flames crackled to life, warming the air while I prepared for the sauna.
Inside, the heat built steadily. I sat on the wooden benches, letting the steam work its way in. They offer courses here too, on sauna use and ice bathing, even yoga-inspired exercises and breathing techniques. But for this visit, I kept it straightforward. After a while, I stepped out, ready for the contrast.
The group sessions happen regularly, with times listed online, but the private option suited my solo trip.
The Quick Plunge into the Fjord
The real draw was the ice bathing, or at least a cold dip in the fjord waters. Sessions like that typically last about ten minutes, enough to feel the rush without overdoing it. I waded in, the chill biting at my skin as the river current tugged gently. It woke me up fast, sharpening every sense against the backdrop of Trøndelag's rugged coast.
Back on the beach, I warmed by the fire again, watching boats drift by at the river's mouth. They tailor experiences for groups or courses, which could make for a fuller day with friends. For me, though, this quiet mix of heat and cold hit the spot.
As the light faded, I changed back in the bathhouse and walked toward town. The whole spot felt tied to the landscape, open and inviting in Norway's central reaches.
