The path from the hotel led straight down to the water's edge, where the floating saunas bobbed gently on Kvitåvatn. I had booked an hour on a quiet weekday afternoon, paying 650 Norwegian kroner at the reception. The air felt crisp, typical for eastern Norway in early fall, and the mountains loomed in the distance.

Two saunas floated there, each built for up to ten people. I chose one and stepped inside, finding a simple changing room right by the door. The setup made sense for the location: a ladder outside for dips in the lake, and safety buoys visible from the shore. Lights lined the way back to the hotel, which eased my mind as dusk approached.

Building the Heat Inside

Once changed, I settled onto the wooden bench. The heat rose steadily, pulling sweat from my skin as I gazed out the window. Gaustatoppen and the Heddersfjellene filled the view, their peaks sharp against the sky. It was peaceful, just me and the lapping water below.

I thought about the resort's wellness area nearby, with its bubble bath and heated pool. Hotel guests get that included, but as a day visitor, I stuck to the sauna. The therapists offer massages afterward, bookable separately, though I passed this time.

The session flew by. At the half-hour mark, I felt ready for a break.

The Refreshing Plunge

I pushed open the door and climbed down the ladder into the mountain water. The cold gripped me instantly, a sharp contrast to the sauna's warmth. I swam a few strokes, feeling the chill wake every nerve. Back on the float, I dried off and returned to the heat.

Repeating that cycle a couple times made the hour worthwhile. On weekends or in high season, it costs 850 kroner per hour, but the weekday rate suited my plans. If you're staying in a cabin, there's a small fee for the wellness area; just check at the desk.

As I walked back up the path, the lights guided me safely. The mountains stood silent, and I carried that calm with me.
