The wind off the fjord carried a chill as I walked down to Svankevigå in Stavanger. It was a gray afternoon in Fjord Norway, the kind where the water looks like polished steel. I had booked Raija, Damp's original floating sauna, for a couple of hours with a few friends. We parked right nearby on Dokkgatå, which made things easy.

Inside, the space felt cozy for our group of eight, well under the ten-person limit. The changing room gave us a spot to shed our layers before stepping into the heat. Wood panels lined the walls, and the air already held that promise of steam.

Building the Steam

We settled on the benches as the sauna warmed up. The heat came on slow at first, then built into a thick, damp cloud that wrapped around us. I could feel the moisture in the air, heavy and soothing after the cold outside.

One by one, we took turns stepping out for a dip in the fjord. The water bit sharp, but it woke me right up. Back inside, the contrast made the steam feel even warmer. We chatted about the day, how popular these sessions have become in Stavanger and across Norway. Booking ahead was key, as the source had mentioned, and it kept things smooth without crowds.

After a few rounds, the rhythm set in: heat, cold, repeat. It cleared my head, left me relaxed.

Trying the Smaller Spot

Later, I wandered over to check out Tuula, another of Damp's saunas in the same area. It floated nearby, smaller with room for four to six. The little changing room was basic but functional, and parking was just as close.

I didn't book a full session there, but peeking in gave me a sense of the options. For a solo visit or a smaller group, it seemed ideal. The whole setup in Svankevigå felt tied to the water, with the fjord right at your feet.

Walking back along the dock, I thought about how Damp started it all here as Stavanger's first floating sauna. The mix of alone time or group hangs, plus that cold bath combo, drew people in. My visit ran about two hours, enough to unwind without rushing.
