The fog hung low over Ålesund's harbor as I made my way to Molovegen. I had heard about this floating sauna bobbing in the water, right in the heart of the city, and decided to book a session on a chilly afternoon. The Art Nouveau buildings along the waterfront added a touch of old-world charm to the walk.

Inside, the setup was simple and welcoming. A changing room with a cold shower waited, and I slipped into my swimwear, remembering to bring two towels as suggested—one for sitting, one for drying off. The sauna held space for up to twelve people, but I had it to myself that day, which felt like a quiet gift.

I stepped into the warm wood-paneled room, the heat from the oven already building steadily. Speakers were there for music, so I connected my phone and played some soft folk tunes to match the fjord mood outside.

Gazing Out at the Waves

The view pulled me in right away. Through the wide windows, the open Atlantic stretched out, gray and restless under the Norwegian sky. I settled on the bench, towel beneath me, and let the heat seep into my bones. It was self-service, the door unlocked when I arrived, oven already warm—just as the booking site promised.

As the sweat started to build, I thought about the other SVAI spots in town, like the ones at Kulturhavna near the hotel and the concert venue. There is even a movable one called Kubben that you can track online. But here on Molja, the floating aspect made it special, rocking gently with the water.

I sipped from my water bottle, feeling the contrast of the warm air and the cool bottle in my hand. The age limit is eighteen, though kids can come with adults, but the solitude suited me fine.

The Plunge That Followed

After about an hour, the heat had me ready for the next part. I stepped out onto the deck, the cold wind biting at my skin. The instructions were clear: a refreshing dip into the sea awaited.

I climbed down the ladder and jumped into the Atlantic. The water shocked me awake, cold and salty, pulling a gasp from my chest. Back up, I hit the cold shower in the changing room to rinse off, then wrapped in my dry towel.

The whole session wrapped up automatically—the door locked behind me as I left. It was a straightforward way to unwind, especially after wandering Ålesund's hilly streets. If you book private or drop in, it is all handled online, making it easy for a quick escape from the day.
