Dyrö Sauna

The ferry docked at Dyrön on a crisp autumn morning, and I walked along the south coast path toward the sauna. The island felt quiet, with rocky cliffs dropping into the sea and a few houses scattered among the trees. I had sent the SMS an hour earlier to start the heating, as instructed.

When I arrived, the door was unlocked, just like the booking details said. Inside, the electric sauna was already warming up, the air thick with that clean, building heat. I changed and settled on the wooden bench, letting the warmth seep in slowly.

After about twenty minutes, the heat pushed me toward the door. The sauna sat just ten meters from the sea, so I stepped out onto the rocks and felt the cool wind off the water. The panoramic view opened up: steep cliffs framing the waves, with the Bohuslän archipelago stretching out in the distance.

I eased into the cold sea for a quick dip. The water shocked my skin, but it felt right after the sauna's steady warmth. Back inside, I repeated the cycle a couple of times, each plunge making the heat feel deeper.

A few other visitors joined midway through. It was a mixed session, public and casual, with everyone respecting the space. We nodded greetings but kept to our own rhythms.

The session ran for two hours, as booked, and cost 140 SEK per person. I had paid ahead, glad for the simple system. As time wound down, the heater would shut off automatically after three hours, but we did not need the extra.

Before leaving, I tidied up the benches and floor, mindful of the cleaning rule. A minimum charge of 500 SEK applies if it is not done right, so I took a moment to sweep and wipe down. Outside, the late afternoon light hit the water, turning it silver.

Walking back to the ferry, I passed a trailhead and a small gallery, reminders of the island's other draws. The sauna's spot by the sea lingered in my mind, a solid place for anyone seeking that nature connection in Bohuslän.
