The ferry ride to Klädesholmen left me with salt in the air and a chill from the Bohuslän wind. I arrived on a gray afternoon, the kind where the sea blends into the sky. The sauna sat tucked between rocky shores, its modern lines fitting right into the rugged coast. I had booked a two-hour slot online, paying 850 SEK for the session, and joined a small group of locals and visitors, maybe ten of us in total.

We started in the changing rooms, simple and clean, with space for everyone without feeling crowded. The place was built for accessibility, easy to move around even with the wheelchair ramp. I slipped into my swimsuit and stepped into the main area, where a kitchen corner invited casual chats over coffee. The panoramic windows drew my eye immediately, framing the sea and the distant outline of Flatholmen island.

Stepping Into the Heat

The sauna room itself was warm wood, heated just enough to build a steady sweat. I settled on a bench, letting the steam loosen my muscles as the group shared quiet stories about the island's herring history. Outside, the ocean lapped at the rocks, a constant reminder of where we were.

After about twenty minutes, I felt ready for the contrast. The hot tub waited nearby, filled with cold seawater straight from the bay. It was not heated, which made the plunge bracing, like jumping into the North Sea itself. I dipped in, the chill shocking my skin, then hurried back to the sauna for another round. A few others joined, laughing at the sharp transition.

We repeated this a couple of times, the rhythm of heat and cold pulling us into a relaxed state. Showers were there for rinsing off, quick and efficient.

Lingering in the Lounge

Once the session wound down, we gathered in the relaxation room, a generous space with views that stretched westward. Someone had arranged snacks from a local caterer, simple bites that paired well with the setting. I sipped water and looked out at the waves, feeling the day's tension fade.

The association runs this place for public use, up to twelve people at a time, and it felt communal, like a shared secret on the island. Parking was easy nearby, and the whole setup encouraged lingering. As I dressed and stepped back into the cool air, the path led past old fishing huts, a nod to Klädesholmen's past.

Walking toward Sillens hus later, I thought about the museum's herring exhibits, though I skipped the tasting that day. The sauna had been enough, a quiet escape amid the rocks and sea.
