Skansen

The bridge over Limfjord carried me from Aalborg's busy center to the quieter side in Nørresundby. It was a crisp autumn afternoon, with leaves turning gold along the paths. I had heard about Skansen's sauna sessions and decided to try one, drawn by the promise of something simple and warming.
I arrived at Lerumbakken 11, where the building sat low and welcoming against the open fields. Inside, the air already carried a faint herbal note, hinting at what was to come. I paid the 77 DKK at the counter, a fair price for the 45-minute session, and changed into my swimsuit before heading to the sauna area.
When the Lifeguard Started the Music
The sauna room filled up quickly with a mix of locals and a few visitors like me. We settled on the wooden benches, the heat building steadily from the stones in the center. Then the lifeguard stepped in, a calm figure who explained this gus might be straightforward due to the crowd, no big swings today.
He chose a soft playlist of ambient tracks that eased into the space, blending with the rising steam. Water poured over the hot stones first, releasing a wave of warmth that wrapped around us. He followed with ice, which sizzled and cracked, sending cool bursts through the heat. Each choice felt personal, like he was tuning the room to the group's quiet energy.
I closed my eyes and let the scents unfold, subtle and shifting, pulling me deeper into relaxation. The music wove through it all, turning the session into something unique, even without the full performance.
The Chill of the Isbad
After the heat peaked, I stepped out and made my way to the isbad. The cold water waited in a deep tub, still and inviting in its own sharp way. I lowered myself in slowly, feeling the shock chase away the sauna's warmth.
That plunge reset everything, my skin tingling as I emerged. A few others did the same, chatting lightly about the day's session. These daily gus run every day of the week, from Monday through Sunday, which makes it easy to fit into any schedule.
Back in the sauna for a final round, the scents lingered on my skin, a reminder of the careful balance the lifeguard had struck. As I dressed and walked out into the cooling evening, the fields around Skansen stretched quiet under the fading light.
