Arndal Spa

The autumn chill hung in the air as I walked along Store Kongensgade in Copenhagen. Leaves scattered across the sidewalk, and the street buzzed with cyclists heading home. I had booked a saunagus session at Arndal Spa for a Wednesday evening, drawn by the promise of essential oils and a good sweat. The building sat among classic Danish architecture, with its clean lines and large windows looking out onto the busy road.
Inside, the spa felt welcoming, with soft lighting and the faint hum of a pool nearby. I changed into a towel and joined a small group in the sauna. The session cost 500 DKK and lasted about 50 minutes, which gave plenty of time to unwind after a day exploring the city.
The Oils on Hot Stones
The guide started by pouring essential oils onto the glowing stones of the sauna oven. Steam rose quickly, carrying scents that shifted with each pour. One moment it was herbal and fresh, the next something more earthy. They explained how the herbs in the oils worked, boosting circulation and mimicking a fever to strengthen the immune system.
I felt the heat build, my skin tingling as sweat began to form. The air grew thick with vapor, and I focused on breathing deeply. It was a reminder of how the body's largest organ, the skin, handles detox, pushing out impurities like alcohol or preservatives from food.
We sat there for stretches, the warmth encouraging a kind of quiet focus. The oils varied from one session to the next, keeping things unpredictable.
Swinging the Towel
Then came the towel swing. The guide waved a large cloth over the oven, sending waves of scented steam through the room. It distributed the vapors evenly, intensifying the heat without overwhelming. My body responded, sweat dripping steadily, and I thought about the calorie burn, around 200 to 300 from a half-hour in the heat, mostly water but good for cleansing.
Afterward, we cooled off near the pool, dipping in to refresh. The contrast sharpened every sensation, from the steam's embrace to the water's chill.
The session wrapped with fresh-cut fruit served right there, a simple touch that revived me. I left feeling renewed, ready for the evening streets of Copenhagen.
