Butchers Heat

The harbor wind cut through my coat as I made my way along Vindmøllevej in Copenhagen's Amager district. It was a chilly Saturday in early spring, and the air carried a faint salt tang from the nearby water. I had booked a saunagus session at Butchers Heat, drawn by the promise of essential oils and heat waves in a simple setup.
Inside, the space felt straightforward, with a sauna room, a cold water bath, and access to the harbor for dips. I paid the 220 DKK at the door and joined a small group for the hour-long session. The gusmester greeted us quietly, explaining how he would work with pure essential oils on the hot stones.
When the Oils Hit the Stones
We settled onto the wooden benches as the heat began to build. The gusmester poured a few drops of oil onto the stones, and a mild scent spread through the room. It was not overpowering, just a gentle mix that promised relaxation and a bit of energy boost.
He picked up a towel and started waving it in slow circles. The motion sent waves of warm air and fragrance toward us, stirring the atmosphere into something calm and inviting. I felt my muscles loosen as the heat wrapped around me. Between rounds, he mentioned how these oils could help with circulation and cleansing, though he kept it light, without much talk.
The session moved at a steady pace, with three or four such waves over the sixty minutes. Each time, the scent varied slightly, building on the last.
Stepping Out for the Harbor Dip
After the first wave, we stepped outside for a quick dip in the harbor. The water was cold, even in spring, but refreshing after the sauna's warmth. I plunged in up to my shoulders, feeling the chill chase away the heat.
Back inside, the contrast sharpened everything. We repeated this a couple more times, dipping between each gus. The gusmester encouraged it, saying it added a fresh element year-round. On that day, with the sun low over the water, the dips felt like a natural part of the rhythm.
By the end, I lingered a bit in the cold bath inside, letting the session sink in. The whole visit left me with a quiet sense of renewal, ready to face the windy walk back.
