Svøm & Fitness

The train from Copenhagen dropped me in Albertslund on a crisp Thursday afternoon. This suburb, with its rows of low-rise apartments and wide green spaces, felt like a quiet escape from the city bustle. I walked the short distance to Nyvej, where the Svøm & Fitness center sat among sports fields and bike paths.
Inside, the air carried a faint chlorine tang from the pool. I headed to the reception, paid 30 DKK, and booked my spot for the saunagus session. They run these on Tuesdays and Thursdays, each lasting about 30 minutes. I grabbed my towel, slipped into my swimwear, and filled my water bottle before making my way to the infrared sauna area.
Settling into the Warm Glow
The sauna was tucked into a corner of the swimming hall, a compact space with room for nine people. I joined a small group, including a couple chatting quietly in Danish. We all wore swimwear, which made sense for the mixed setting. The infrared heat started gently, warming from the inside out rather than blasting from hot stones.
As the session began, the warmth built steadily. I leaned back against the wooden bench, feeling my muscles loosen. The group stayed relaxed, no one rushing the pace. Sweat beaded on my skin, and I sipped water to stay hydrated. It was a far cry from the intense steam rooms I'd tried in Finland, but the infrared style had its own subtle appeal.
Halfway through, the heat peaked, drawing out a deep flush. Conversations faded as everyone focused on the sensation. The 30 minutes passed in a calm rhythm, without any dramatic infusions or rituals, just steady warmth in a shared space.
The Cool Down by the Pool
When the session ended, I stepped out into the cooler air of the hall. The pool was right there, its blue water inviting after the heat. I took a quick dip, the chill contrasting sharply with the sauna's glow. It refreshed me instantly, washing away the sweat.
A few others from the group did the same, floating briefly before heading to the showers. The center felt community-oriented, with locals coming and going for swims or workouts. I dried off with my towel, changed, and walked back out into the evening light.
Albertslund's paths were quiet as I headed to the train. The suburb's modern layout, with its emphasis on open spaces, matched the straightforward vibe of the sauna experience. It was a simple visit, grounded in everyday wellness rather than elaborate traditions.
