Skovgus

The train from Copenhagen dropped me off in Espergærde on a crisp autumn afternoon. I walked along quiet streets lined with neat houses and patches of forest, heading toward Kongevejen. The air carried a hint of sea salt from the nearby coast. When I arrived at Skovgus, the place felt tucked away, simple and welcoming with free parking right outside.

I paid 160 kroner at the door and changed in the basic dressing room. The session lasted about ninety minutes, and soon we gathered in the sauna. A small group settled on the wooden benches, ready for the quiet style they run here.

When the Gusmester Started the Oils

The gusmester introduced the first set of oils with a calm voice. No one else spoke, just him explaining how they would blend with the heat. He waved a towel to spread the warmth and scents around the room. The session built in three rounds like that, each one lasting around eleven minutes.

Music played softly in the background, matching the oils somehow. At times, he added a story or rang a sound bowl to keep us present. We focused on breathing techniques too, drawing the group into a shared rhythm. The heat grew steady, not overwhelming, and the quiet let me sink into my thoughts.

By the end of the round, sweat beaded on my skin. I stepped out feeling the shift from hot to cool air.

Sipping Tea Between Rounds

Pauses lasted eight to ten minutes, enough time to recover. They served tea and salty snacks every time, which hit the spot after the heat. On this visit, fruit appeared too, along with homemade ginger shots that added a sharp kick.

I used the break to cool down. The shower rinsed off the sweat quickly, or I could dip into the cold water bath outside. That plunge woke me right up, the chill biting into my warmed body. Back inside, the group chatted a little, but the quiet vibe carried over.

Someone passed around pieces of cake during one pause. It felt like a small treat, pairing well with the tea. These moments made the whole experience flow, building energy for the next round.

Wrapping Up the Last Dip

The final round ended with the gusmester using a fan to swirl the last scents. We all filed out, bodies relaxed from the cycle of heat and cool. I hit the cold bath one more time, letting the water close over me.

Afterward, I dried off and used the toilet before changing back. The walk to the station felt lighter, with the forest edges glowing in the fading light. Skovgus left me thinking about that balance of silence and ritual.
