The wind off the Baltic Sea carried a chill as I walked up from the harbor in Gudhjem. Bornholm's rocky coast felt rugged underfoot, and the small town had that quiet fishing village air, with smokehouses lining the streets. I had heard about the local swimming hall and decided to check it out on a Thursday, when they run their aufguss sessions.

At the entrance on Klippevænget, I paid the 110 DKK fee for a 60-minute slot. The place felt straightforward, like a community spot where locals gather. I changed in the locker room and headed toward the sauna area, towel in hand.

The Heat Building Up

Inside the sauna, the warmth wrapped around me slowly. A few others sat on the wooden benches, and soon the aufguss master started the ritual. He waved the towel to fan hot air over us, building the intensity in waves.

Sweat beaded on my skin as the session went on. The air grew thick and humid, pulling the tension from my muscles. I closed my eyes and let the heat sink in, thinking about the island's granite cliffs just outside. After about 15 minutes, the door opened, and we stepped out for a break.

The group chatted lightly in Danish, and I nodded along, feeling the shared calm of the moment.

Dipping into the Cold

Next came the cold bath. I lowered myself into the chilly water, and it shocked my system right away. My breath caught, but then a rush of clarity followed.

Afterward, I moved to the pool for a gentler cool-down. The water there was milder, letting me float and stretch out. A couple of laps helped shake off the last of the heat. Back in the sauna for another round, the cycle repeated, each time leaving me more relaxed.

The 60 minutes passed steadily, with the aufguss tying it all together. No rush, just the rhythm of heat and cold.

Heading Back Out

As the session wrapped up, I rinsed off and dressed. The hall had a simple setup, focused on the basics without extras. I stepped outside into the fading light, the sea air crisp again.

Walking back through Gudhjem, I passed old houses and the harbor where boats bobbed. The visit left me refreshed, ready for whatever the island had next. If you're on Bornholm on a Thursday, it's worth the stop.
