Køge Svømmeland

The air in Køge carried a salty hint from the nearby bay as I walked toward the swim center on a crisp Wednesday morning. Køge Svømmeland sits in this quiet coastal town, about half an hour south of Copenhagen by train. I had heard about their sauna sessions and decided to try one during my trip through Zealand.
Inside, the place buzzed with locals heading to the pools. I paid the 30 DKK at the counter and changed into my swimsuit. The sauna area felt like an extension of the swimming facilities, simple and functional, with clean tiles underfoot.
When the Oils Hit the Stove
The session started right on time, lasting about 30 minutes. I settled onto the wooden bench in the sauna, surrounded by a small group of others. The gusmester, calm and focused, mixed pure essential oils with water and poured the blend onto the hot stove.
Scents filled the room slowly at first, then built into a wave of relaxation. Eucalyptus or something herbal, I could not quite place it, but it eased the tension in my shoulders. The heat rose steadily, wrapping around us like a blanket.
Halfway through, the gusmester picked up a towel and began to swing it in wide arcs. That motion sent bursts of scented steam our way, distributing the warmth evenly. It brought a sense of calm to the body and mind, just as promised. Sweat beaded on my skin, and I focused on my breathing, letting the aromas do their work.
The Cold Plunge After
Once the session ended, I stepped out and headed for the cold bath nearby. The water hit like a shock, icy and invigorating after the sauna's heat. I dipped in quickly, feeling my pulse race, then climbed out to let my body adjust.
The pool area was just steps away, with lanes full of swimmers doing laps. I lingered there for a bit, watching the activity before drying off. These sauna sessions happen on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, fitting neatly into the swim center's schedule.
Walking back through Køge's old streets, with their half-timbered houses and harbor views, I felt refreshed. The experience lingered in my muscles, a quiet reminder of that aromatic ritual.
