Rønne Svømmehal

The ferry from the mainland had just docked in Rønne when I decided to check out the local swim hall. Bornholm sits out in the Baltic Sea, with its rocky shores and quiet winters, and I figured a sauna session would shake off the chill from the crossing. I walked through the town, past low stone buildings and empty streets, until I reached Rønne Svømmehal. The place looked like a typical public pool from the outside, functional and unassuming, with a few cars parked nearby on that Thursday evening.
Inside, the air carried a mix of chlorine and damp warmth. I paid the entry fee with my clip card, then added 65 kroner for the 45-minute saunagus. It was every other Thursday in the winter months, starting at seven, so I timed my visit just right. People were already gathering, locals mostly, chatting in low voices as they changed.
Settling into the Steam
The sauna room filled up slowly, with about a dozen of us finding spots on the wooden benches. The heat started mild, building as the gus master poured water over the stones. Steam rose in thick clouds, carrying that sharp, clean scent you get in public saunas here.
We sat through a few rounds, sweat beading on skin as the temperature climbed. Someone opened the door for a quick vent, letting in a draft from the hall. I focused on my breathing, the way the warmth seeped into my bones after the cold walk over.
By the third infusion, the air grew heavy and hot. Folks shifted positions, towels draped over laps. It felt communal, like these sessions pull the islanders together during the dark season.
The Cold Plunge After
When the 45 minutes wrapped up, I stepped out into the cooler air of the bath area. The koldvandsbad waited nearby, a simple cold bath filled with icy water. I eased in, the shock hitting my legs first, then spreading up as I submerged.
That jolt cleared my head, washing away the sauna haze. A few others joined, dipping quickly before heading to the main pool for a swim. The pool stretched out long and blue under the hall lights, lanes marked for laps.
I floated there for a bit, the water cool but not freezing, listening to the echo of splashes. It rounded out the visit, blending the heat with that refreshing chill.
Heading Out into the Night
After drying off, I gathered my things and stepped back into the winter evening. The session had lasted from seven to a quarter to eight, just as scheduled. Bornholm's stars dotted the sky, clearer out here away from city lights.
Walking back toward the harbor, I felt loose and warmed through. These public hall events keep things straightforward, no frills, but they deliver that core sauna rhythm. If you're on the island during winter, catching one on a Thursday makes for a solid way to unwind.
