Vestbadet Viborg

The autumn chill hung in the air as I walked along Rughavevej in Viborg. Jutland's flat fields stretched out nearby, and the town felt quiet under a gray sky. I had heard about the saunagus at Vestbadet, so I headed there on a Thursday afternoon, ready for some warmth.
Inside, the public bath had a simple setup. I paid 125 DKK at the counter for a two-hour session. The place drew a mix of locals, some chatting in Danish as they changed. I slipped into my towel and made my way to the sauna area, where the air already carried a faint herbal scent.
When the Gusmester Poured the Oils
The sauna filled up with about a dozen people. We settled on the wooden benches, and the gusmester entered with a bucket of water mixed with essential oils. He explained briefly that each oil had its own effect, like easing stress or muscle pain.
He poured the liquid over the hot stones on the stove. Steam rose with a hiss, carrying scents of eucalyptus and maybe lavender. The gusmester grabbed a towel and started swinging it through the air. He moved the heat and aroma around the room in wide arcs.
The warmth built in waves. It wrapped around us, mixing with the oils' effects. My skin tingled, and the air grew thick with that soothing blend. After a few minutes, sweat beaded on my forehead, and I felt the tension from the day melt away.
The Break in Store Klaus
When the round ended, we stepped out for a break. The gusmester had mentioned we were ready for a dip in Store Klaus. I followed the group to the pool area, where the cold water waited.
I jumped in, and the chill shocked my system. It was a quick plunge, but it woke me right up after the heat. Back in the sauna for another round, the pattern repeated: more oils, more towel swings, more building warmth. These sessions happen on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, so folks can plan around them.
By the end of the two hours, I felt refreshed. The aromatherapy lingered on my skin as I dressed and stepped back into the Viborg evening. The cathedral spire loomed in the distance, a reminder of the town's old roots amid the modern bathhouse routine.
