Tupaswilla / Laukaan Tupaswilla Oy

The road to Tupaswilla wound through dense forests and past quiet lakes, typical of Finland's Lakeland region. I arrived on a crisp autumn afternoon, the air carrying a faint chill that promised good sauna weather. The place sat in a heritage village setting, with old log buildings scattered around, and I could see the massive smoke sauna right away, billed as the world's largest.
I parked near the entrance and walked toward the main area, where a group was already gathering for an event. The site felt like a step back in time, with paths leading to the lake and nature all around. It was public, so folks from nearby Laukaa and beyond could drop in, but that day it buzzed with a company gathering.
Inside the Giant Sauna
Stepping into the smoke sauna, I felt the scale of it immediately. It could hold up to 130 people, and the vast space echoed with low voices as we settled on the benches. The walls, made of thick logs, held the smoky scent from years of use, a deep, earthy aroma that filled the air.
The heat built slowly at first, then grew intense as the stones released their warmth. We sat in rounds, sweating out the day, with pauses to step outside and cool off. Someone mentioned it was Finland's biggest, and it showed in how the room swallowed the crowd without feeling cramped.
After a few sessions, I wandered to the lake access nearby. The water looked inviting, cold and clear under the fading light.
The Meal by the Lake
Later, we gathered in one of the party houses, a cozy log building perfect for groups. The restaurant had set up a spread of local dishes, hearty and simple, which hit the spot after the sauna. I ate slowly, watching the lake through the windows as the sun dipped low.
Conversations flowed about the day's activities, from the sauna to walks in the surrounding nature. The place catered to all sorts of events, like weddings or company outings, and it made sense with the setup: plenty of space for mingling and relaxing.
As evening came, I took one last dip in the lake, the chill water a sharp contrast to the sauna's heat. The heritage feel lingered as I headed back to the car, the smoke sauna's warmth still in my bones.
