Varjolan Tilan Matkailu Oy

The drive from Jyväskylä took about half an hour, winding through flat fields and patches of pine forest. I arrived at Varjolan Tilan Matkailu Oy in Laukaa just as the sun dipped low, casting long shadows over the rapids nearby. The place felt like a working farm turned into a quiet retreat, with buildings scattered along the water's edge.
I had come for one of their open smoke sauna sessions, drawn by the promise of an authentic Finnish experience in a natural setting. The air carried a faint woodsmoke scent even before I stepped inside.
Stepping Into the Koskenniskan Smoke Sauna
The Koskenniskan savusauna sat right by the rapids, its dark wooden walls blending into the landscape. I changed in a simple room nearby and entered the sauna, where the heat from birch wood smoke wrapped around me slowly. A few other visitors sat on the benches, chatting softly in Finnish.
The steam built as someone added water to the stones, and I felt the warmth sink into my bones. Outside, the sound of rushing water from the Kuusaankoski rapids mixed with the crackle of the fire. It was a steady rhythm that made the session feel connected to the land.
After a while, I stepped out for a break. The cool evening air hit my skin, and I walked down to the lake access point for a quick dip. The water was chilly but refreshing, pulling the heat right out of me.
Trying the Bio Steam Sauna Later On
With the smoke sauna wrapping up, I wandered over to the biohöyrysauna for a different feel. This one used a gentler steam, infused with what seemed like herbal scents from the surrounding nature. It was smaller, more intimate, and I sat alone for a bit, letting the moist heat ease any leftover tension.
The setup here included easy access to the outdoors, so I alternated between the warmth inside and short walks along the garden paths. Birds called from the trees, and the fading light turned the rapids into a silvery line.
Nearby, the restaurant offered simple sauna snacks, like small bites of local cheese and bread. I grabbed a plate and sat by the water, watching the current flow past. It rounded out the visit nicely, blending the sauna ritual with the quiet of the Finnish countryside.
Heading Back Through the Fields
As night fell, I dressed and strolled back to my car through the fields around Varjola. The farm's history as a rural spot showed in the old buildings and the way everything tied back to the land and water. It had been a full evening of saunas and nature, tailored in that unhurried Finnish way.
Driving away, the rapids' roar faded behind me. I thought about how places like this keep the old traditions alive, right in the heart of Lakeland.
