Just Sauna

The wind off the harbor carried a salty tang as I walked toward Just Sauna in Sydhavnen. Copenhagen's old maritime district felt quiet that afternoon, with cranes looming over the water and a few cyclists passing by. I had heard about this spot from a local, a mobile sauna built by volunteers, and I was curious to see how it all came together.

I arrived just before my session on a Tuesday, the air cool enough to make the promise of heat appealing. The setup sat on wheels, a wood-fired unit with room for up to twenty people, though only a handful showed up that day. We gathered around the fire pit first, chatting while the flames crackled and warmed the logs inside.

Once the sauna heated up, we stepped inside. The wood scent filled the space, and the benches felt solid underfoot. Heat built steadily from the stove, and I could feel my muscles loosen as sweat started to bead.

A few others joined, part of the community that helped build this place. They talked about connecting mind, body, and soul, which made sense in that shared warmth. We sat for stretches, then headed out to the cold tubs nearby. The plunge shocked my system, water icy against heated skin.

Back in for another round, the cycle repeated. Outdoor showers stood ready for rinsing off, simple but effective in the open air.

After about sixty minutes, the session wrapped up. I changed in the small omklædning area, towel drying off before pulling on my clothes. The toilet was basic, functional for the spot.

We lingered by the bålområde, the fire still going as the sun dipped lower. Free parking nearby made it easy to drive in, though I had come by bike from the city center. The whole thing cost 170 kroner, fair for the experience in this family-run setup.

Walking back through the harbor, I thought about how these enthusiasts had turned a mobile rig into a gathering point. Sydhavnen's industrial edge added to the raw feel, far from polished spa vibes.
