Sauna 85

Sauna 85 - Image

The wind off the harbor carried a chill as I made my way to Sydhavn. Copenhagen's south harbor area has that mix of old industry and new builds, with wide streets and the occasional bike path cutting through. I had booked a spot at Sauna 85 through their calendar, picking a weekday evening when they set up near Alva Myrdals Plads.

The setup felt temporary but solid, like they knew how to make any spot work. I arrived just as the group gathered, about a dozen of us, though they have room for up to eighteen. Changing rooms were straightforward, nothing fancy, but enough space to get ready without bumping elbows.

The Slow Build of Heat

We filed into the sauna, and the session started right away. It lasted about seventy-five minutes, the kind of time that lets you settle in without rushing. The guide poured water infused with essential oils over the hot stones, and the air filled with a clean, herbal scent that eased the mind.

Heat rose steadily, not in a rush, but layer by layer. Sweat came on slow, and I felt my thoughts quiet down, like the body and head finally syncing up. They call it a forced meditation, and it fit— a break from the daily grind, focusing on warmth and breath.

Between rounds, we stepped out for the cold water baths. The plunge hit sharp, waking everything up. Good space around meant no crowding, even with the group size.

Cooling Off by the Water

After the last infusion, I lingered outside, letting the harbor air cool my skin. Sydhavn's got that working waterfront feel, with containers stacked nearby and the sound of distant ships. It added to the contrast, coming from the intense heat to this open, breezy spot.

The whole thing cost two hundred Danish kroner, fair for what you get, and they run these gus sessions every day of the week. I heard they move around Copenhagen— sometimes at Refshaleøen or Svanemøllen— so you check the booking to see where.

Walking back along the allée, I felt lighter, the stress of the day gone. It was clear why they started this: to share the boost to health and mood that saunas bring. My visit left me curious to try another location next time.
