Arctic SnowHotel / Snowflake Oy

The wind cut sharp as I pulled up to the Arctic SnowHotel, snow crunching under my boots in the dim Lapland light. Rovaniemi sat quiet that winter afternoon, with the frozen lake stretching out nearby and the air thick with the promise of northern chill. I had come for the snow sauna experience, drawn by tales of heat carved from ice.
Inside the reception, staff handed me a ticket for the lumisaunaelämys, part of their winter offerings. The place blended hotel rooms made of snow with glass igloos dotting the grounds. I changed into a towel and followed the path to the sauna area, where the public sessions ran through the season.
Heat Rising from the Ice Walls
I pushed open the door to the snow sauna, and a wave of steam greeted me from the stove in the corner. The walls, built entirely from packed snow and ice, gleamed under soft lights, with benches carved right into the frozen structure. A few other visitors sat scattered, towels draped over laps, as the heat built slow and steady.
We took turns adding water to the rocks, sending bursts of löyly that filled the space with warmth. The contrast hit hard, my skin tingling against the cold surfaces. After a while, I stepped out into the crisp air, the panoramic view of the lake and distant trees pulling my gaze. Back in for another round, the cycle felt right in this frozen spot.
No one rushed. The session stretched on, letting the heat sink deep before the inevitable cool-down.
Soaking in the Outdoor Tub
From the sauna, I headed to the hot tub just outside, bubbles churning in the open air. The tub sat with a clear view over the lake, steam rising into the night as darkness fell. I sank in, the water hot against my cooled skin, while stars began to prick the sky above.
A bar nearby served drinks, and I grabbed a simple beer to sip while soaking. The hotel's restaurant, the Kota, hummed in the distance with diners wrapping up meals. This spot mixed nature with a touch of comfort, the garden-like grounds quiet under snow.
Later, I wandered toward the ice restaurant for a look, but stuck to the sauna path. The whole visit wove heat and cold into something steady.
Winding Down by the Lake
As the session ended, I dressed and walked along the lake access path, the ice creaking softly underfoot. The hotel offered packages that bundled sauna time with dinners or activities like ice carving, but I kept mine simple. Back at the main building, I lingered in the warmth of the lobby.
Rovaniemi's winter held a calm pull, with the city lights faint on the horizon. The snow sauna had delivered its quiet thrill, heat born from the freeze. I left with that memory lingering, the chill still on my cheeks.
