Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, Rovaniemi

Snow crunched under my boots as I walked up to the Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna in Rovaniemi. The air bit cold, sharp with that Lapland winter edge, and the streetlights glowed against the early dark. This city calls itself the official home of Santa Claus, and even in the quiet of evening, you feel that magic in the frosty breeze off the river.
I checked in around mid-afternoon, right after the 3 PM mark. The lobby hummed with a mix of travelers, some bundled up for Arctic adventures. My room had that cozy Lappish touch, with hints of northern lights in the decor. It made settling in feel welcoming, like stepping into a storybook version of the north.
Heading Down to the First Floor
By evening, I grabbed the towel from my room and made my way to the guest saunas on the first floor. They open from 6 to 9 PM, a solid three hours for anyone staying at the hotel. The setup felt straightforward, with showers and changing rooms right there. No fuss, just the basics you need to get ready.
I stepped into the sauna, and the dry heat wrapped around me slow and steady. Wood benches, simple lines, nothing overdone. A few other guests joined, nodding hello in that quiet Finnish way. We sat, letting the warmth sink in, sweat building as the minutes ticked by. Outside, I knew the city lights twinkled, but in here, it was all about the heat and the hush.
After a good session, the shower rinsed off the sweat clean. I felt that post-sauna glow, muscles loose and mind clear. The hotel's Green Key mark came to mind; they take care of the environment, which fits with Lapland's wild beauty.
Dinner at Frans and Chérie
Back upstairs, I headed to the restaurant for a bite. Frans and Chérie serves up French-style dishes, hearty and flavorful. I ordered something simple, paired with a glass of wine, while the place buzzed with evening chatter. The hotel has another spot, Amarillo, for those wanting bolder flavors and maybe some music, but I kept it low-key that night.
The free WiFi worked fine in my room afterward, no password needed. I scrolled through photos of the day, thinking about Rovaniemi's mix of city life and nature. It's right on the edge of the wild, with traditions that pull you in. Parking was easy too, if you drive in, and the bar downstairs looked inviting for a nightcap.
Breakfast the next morning started at 7 on weekends, a spread to fuel up before heading out. But that sauna time stuck with me, a warm spot in the cold north.
